Campbell delighted with point at champs

-

East Fife manager Dick Campbell heaped praise on his side after they stretched their unbeaten run to nine games with a hard-fought point against newly-crowned League Two champions Stenhousemuir.

It ended 0-0 at stormlashed Ochilview as, for the second time since taking the reins, Campbell watched his side match the best team in the league.

Both sides struggled in the conditions to produce much flowing football, though Allan Fleming was called upon to make a couple of important saves as the home side enjoyed the better of the early exchanges. Adam Brown also saw an effort rebound from the bar.

However, the Fifers came into it and had their own bright moments especially when Kieran Millar forced a diving stop from Darren Jamieson at the end of a slick passing move.

The Methil men might have returned home with all three points had the referee spotted a clear handball in the Stenhousemuir box midway through the second half.

Campbell’s side remain six points off the play-off places, and the manager said: “It’s amazing we’re even talking about the playoffs when my objective was to stay in the league, but we’ve done that now and we can look ahead.

“It would have helped if we had taken three points here today, but all we can do is get ourselves organised for next week when we’ve got a home game.

“Honestly, other teams know they have to keep winning because the first result they’ll be looking for today is Stenhousemuir against East Fife.

“We have got Dumbarton, Peterhead and Spartans all wanting to do the same as us and get into the play-offs.”
