Gable Endies have last laugh to win bragging rights

-

Dundee United women remain rooted to the foot of the SWPL after losing to local rivals Montrose at Foundation Park yesterday.

Georgia Carter was the Gable Endies hero after she snatched all three points for the Angus side with the winner deep into stoppage time.

She rose above the Tangerines defence to rattle home a header from a free-kick to seal a 2-1 success.

United had opened the scoring on 24 minutes when Georgie Robb fired home.

Montrose pressed for the equaliser and were rewarded for their efforts when Jade Mclaren found the net on 68 minutes after a scramble in the box.

The defeat sees United sit bottom of the league – on goal difference from Hamilton, who lost 1-0 to Spartans.

Elsewhere, Celtic and Rangers picked up wins to ensure they remain top on the 76-point mark.

The Hoops beat Partick Thistle 3-0 – former Forfar Farmington star Amy Gallacher was on the scoresheet – while Rangers saw off defending champions Glasgow City 1-0.

The Old Firm go into the penultimate round of fixtures in midweek still level on points, with leaders Celtic boasting a 15-goal advantage.

Aberdeen went down 3-2 at home to Motherwell, with a lastgasp Chelsie Watson goal sealing the points for the visitors.

● Forfar Farmington’s hopes of silverware were ended yesterday as Stenhousemuir clinched the SWF League One trophy after beating Edinburgh Caledonia 4-0 at Meadowbank.

Forfar did not play but are guaranteed second place after this result, regardless of their score against Bonnyrigg Rose next Sunday.

Elsewhere in League One, Queen of the South lost an early goal to Dundee West but roared back to win 4-1.

The regional SWFL saw its second title winner named, as Armadale Thistle beat Mcdermid Ladies 6-1 and nearest challengers Glenrothes Strollers were held to a draw by Edinburgh South.

● Manchester United lifted the Women’s FA Cup for the first time in their history following a comfortable 4-0 victory over Tottenham at Wembley.

Ella Toone, who started when United were narrowly beaten by Chelsea in the final a year ago, broke the deadlock with a fine finish in first-half stoppage time.

Second-half goals from Rachel Williams and Lucia Garcia (2) ensured the silverware was heading back north.
