Leicestershire win in Cup for first time since August 2014

ONE-DAY CUP ROUND-UP

- By Joshua Richards

THOUGH both Mark Pettini and Mark Cosgrove narrowly missed out on centuries there was plenty of cause for celebration at Grace Road on Tuesday as Leicester shire won a One-Day Cup match for the first time since August 2014.

Steven Croft won the toss and invited the home side to bat first, but Lancashire toiled in the field as Leicestershire made 307-8, with Pettini hitting 92 off 99 balls and Cosgrove adding 91runs from 82 deliveries.

Neil Dexter bumped up their total at the death with 21 runs off just ten deliveries and then proved the hero with the ball, recording career-best figures of 4-22 as Lancashire were bowled out for 176 inside 40 overs.

Leicestershire’s elite performance director Andrew McDonald said: “It was a fantastic all-round effort. It’s good to find a formula to win games of one-day cricket, which we’ve struggled to do.

“It’s a short tournament, so you’ve got to hit the ground running.”

A trademark innings from Peter Trego (104) saw Somerset chase down 296 to beat Middlesex by four wickets at Taunton.

Trego took the wickets of both Middlesex openers Paul Stirling (58) and Ryan Higgins (39), but a quickfire knock of 89 from Nick Gubbins saw them make 296-9.

Somerset looked to be stuttering, particularly after Johann Myburgh was forced to retire hurt on 22.

But Trego, backed up by Lewis Gregory (69) and Roelof van der Merwe’s knock of 41 off 25 deliveries helped the team home with an over to spare.

Warwickshire eased to an eightwicket win over Northamptonshire, thanks largely to a 180-run opening stand between William Porterfield (92) and Sam Hain (88).

A high-scoring affair at Chelmsford saw Essex, inspired by Nick Browne (99), beat Glamorgan by four wickets.

And a mammoth 203-run opening stand between Daniel Bell-Drummond (91) and Joe Denly (105) took Kent past Hampshire by five wickets.
