Grinding out a draw is crucial for title, Chris
THIS SEASON I have started watching one day of each of Somerset’s home County Championship matches. I have been pleasantly surprised by the size of crowd on every occasion.
As such, Chris Rogers’ comment following Somerset’s superb victory over Nottinghamshire appears to be self-justifying.
Referring to their previous loss to Middlesex (after Rogers made a sporting declaration), Rogers is quoted as saying: “You don’t learn from playing out boring draws.”
Against Middlesex, Somerset had grafted and fought back. In the end, all that hard work was for no reward. Antony Gibson’s radio commentary had been scathing of the declaration. Gibson has a long association with Somerset and is well placed to represent the views of its many supporters where Division One cricket remains important, both from a viewpoint of pride and finances.
‘The Verdict’ suggests the Notts win puts Somerset in the hunt for their first County Championship title, 22 points behind leaders, Middlesex.
Drawing with Middlesex would have closed that Championship gap to just six points.
The County Championship will be won through the team being as dedicated and determined as Marcus Trescothick in his performance at Nottingham. Avoiding defeat, when it looks probable, is an essential element to winning the title. ROGER TREWHELLA Crediton
