May day for St Just ahead of big finale

- By Andrew Lawton

AFTER the potential title decider was washed out last weekend, St Just will be attempting to win the Cornwall title on Saturday – without their captain Gareth May.

The Cornwall Premier Division, which normally finishes on the August Bank Holiday, extends into September this season and May will be missing the final game to be a best man at a wedding.

St Just could have taken a big step towards the title against Truro on Saturday at Boscawen Park but the weather intervened and, in an anti-climax, no play was possible.

But the equation for St Just remains the same. They are a single point ahead of Truro, so must equal or better their result against Grampound Road when they face Falmouth.

And May is confident that the big-game experience in his squad – St Just won five titles in a row between 2005 and 2009 and again in 2014 – will come through on Saturday.

“My mate booked his wedding for the weekend after the season and it ended up as the last game, it’s not great timing but the rest of the lads will be fine,” said May.

“We have had a very tough season, our overseas pro left us after a couple of games so to be in with a shout (of the title) the boys have done very well.

“We have used 14 or 15 players over the season and a fair few of the lads will have experience of playing for trophies at this part of the season, so it’s not too different for them.”

If the teams are locked level on points at the end of Saturday’s play, the league title will be awarded to St Just as they have the better head-to-head record after beating Truro by six wickets back in May.
