The end for Morgan
THE withdrawals of Eoin Morgan and Alex Hales from the Bangladesh tour is brave considering the criticism that has followed.
It’s okay for us hiding behind a keyboard to say we would have gone, knowing we are never going to be asked. I’m sure we don’t want players over there who are constantly looking over their shoulders and worrying about every little noise.
On their international future, Hales’Test place was probably in jeopardy anyway so it may be a blessing we are able to give others an opportunity.
As far as his one-day place is concerned, I’m sure he will be back.
However, I can’t see a way back for Morgan as captain. He may get selected in the future as a batsman but can he really expect to be the skipper again? Despite the support he is said to have received from his current teammates, there must be some unspoken resentment.
There are two ways of looking at this. Firstly, he as captain maybe should have thought, “If the lads want to go I, as leader, should go too”.
Secondly, the players might have said, “If the skip won’t go, then we won’t go either”.
Either way, perhaps the side are better off with a new captain. I’m guessing that Hales and Morgan will, however, be available for the IPL where their safety is assured. PAUL MUNNERY Cambridge
