All-round good guy Trego nets new deal

- By Joshua Peck

AFTER a stellar 2016, all-rounder Peter Trego has committed his future to Somerset by signing a contract extension.

Trego, 35, passed 1,000 Championship runs for the first time in his career last season as Somerset finished runners-up to Middlesex in the County Championship.

He has played 207 first-class matches for the county since making his debut in 2000, and has scored more than 16,000 runs and taken over 600 wickets in all formats.

Trego said: “I’m delighted to have signed an extension to my contract with the club I love. It’s always been my dream to represent the county and to do so to the best of my ability.

“Last year was such an exciting year for us all and in many ways increased my passion for the coming years. Not only did we nearly reach the Holy Grail of the Championship, we witnessed all of our young talent become top class performers.

“Obviously my role within the team is always evolving and I’m happy with that. It’s all about what the team needs from me and hopefully I’ve shown throughout my career that I will do everything asked of me with a smile on my face and the Wyvern burning in my heart.”

Trego will now remain at Taunton until at least the end of 2018 with Somerset director of cricket Matt Maynard thrilled at the deal.

Maynard said: “Pete is an extremely driven cricketer and everyone associated with the club is delighted that he has signed a contract extension.

“He is one of the hardest working players on the circuit and his passion for the club is plain to see every time he takes a wicket or scores a hundred.

“Not only does he do the business on the field, he is also one of the biggest characters in the dressing room and I look forward to working with him for the next two years.” Peter Trego is one of those cricketers you would want in your side – tough and uncompromising and, at 35, he is one of the fittest guys on the domestic circuit. He has matured his game with age and his presence in the dressing room and at the club will be crucial as Somerset aim to build on last season’s success
