Jimmy shows he’s a class act with charity donation

- By Seth Francis

WITH Christmas round the corner, Hampshire batsman Jimmy Adams has shown his generous side by handing over £35,000 to Parkinson’s UK.

The money was raised as part of the 36-year-old’s benefit year with the charity close to his heart as his father, Mike, has suffered with Parkinson’s since 2009.

Adams is also close friends with Sky Sports presenter Dave Clark, who also suffers from Parkinson’s. Clark even hosted a lunch as part of Adams’ benefit year to contribute to the final amount.

Adams, his dad and Clark met with Parkinson’s UK’s chief executive Steve Ford at the charity’s national office in London, where a cheque was handed over.

Adams said: “It was a great year and I was surprised by just how generous people were.

“By having my dad and Dave so involved in the fundraising, we were able to also raise awareness and give people a greater understanding of what Parkinson’s is.

“I’m looking forward to working with and supporting the charity in the future.”

On the pitch, former England Lions man Adams averaged 35.88 in 2016, making eight half-centuries as Hampshire finished the season in the relegation zone. They were reprieved following Durham’s points penalty and subsequent demotion to Division Two.

Off the field, there were a number of events hosted by Adams during the 12 months, including golf and cricket days, silent auctions, a Christmas benefit lunch and a 26-mile walk where the left-hander was joined by his dad for the last five miles.

Parkinson’s chief executive Ford added: “Thank you to Jimmy for choosing to support Parkinson’s UK through his benefit year.

“Next year (2017) is set to be an exciting year for the charity, but our work wouldn’t be possible without donations like these.”

The money raised by Adams will help Parkinson’s UK to continue to support the 127,000 people affected by the condition across the UK and to fund vital research work to find better treatments and, ultimately, a cure. For more information, see parkinsons.org.uk
