Giles’ exit has now left Lancs in limbo

- By Nick Hunter

LANCASHIRE are mulling over whether to appoint a new Director of Cricket.

Ashley Giles had filled the role and that of Head Coach before he left for Warwickshire.

Glen Chapple has been appointed as head coach, but the post of Director of Cricket remains vacant.

Lancashire board member Paul Allott said: “Director of Cricket is on the back burner at the moment.

“There are all sorts of moves afoot with cricket domestically.

“The ECB want Boards (like the Lancashire Cricket Board) to come into the county set-up, whether that will happen or not, and when it will happen, I am not sure.

“It would be foolish to race into the Director of Cricket’s post if this is in the offing in the next few months.

“My perception is that the Director of Cricket should be responsible for cricket in Lancashire, from schools to clubs and leagues – feeders into the club.

“I am very keen we have a close look at our relations with the whole of cricket in Lancashire.

“Mike Watkinson was the first Director of Cricket here, and his role was more away from the professional game – which is what I see the role being if and when we appoint one, with Glen and Mark in charge of the professional side of the game.

“But we can take our time. The priority was to get the professional side of Lancashire County Cricket Club sorted out and moving in the right direction, and that’s what we have done.

“And in Glen Chapple and Mark Chilton, we have two guys now that make the appointment of the director of cricket less urgent.

We believe Lancashire have made their biggest and most important appointments for the summer by handing the coaching reins to Red Rose stalwarts Glen Chapple and Mark Chilton. Director of Cricket in county set-ups can be strange beasts who can often get in the way of a coach’s influence. It’s good to hear Lancashire may look for one to keep an eye on matters away from the pro game. We’ll see...
