Happy memories of Huntingdonshire
I WAS very interested in your article about Huntingdonshire CC in a recent edition of The Cricket Paper.
In the mid-’70s, I lived in Royston, Hertfordshire, and was invited to score a game between Huntingdonshire CC and Leicestershire 2nd XI at Grace Road.
I can’t remember a great deal about the game now, but I think Leicestershire won quite easily in the end.
What I do remember was that Alan Ward – the fast bowler who played five Tests for England – was playingfor the home side, and that he was still pretty ‘nippy’, at that time.
I remember him as a very pleasant character, with whom we enjoyed a few beers after the game.
I believe a South African batsman, Marty Schepens, also played in that game, although I don’t remember him making any appearances for Leicestershire’s 1st XI – but I could be wrong. PHILIP BRIGHTWELL via email
