Kiwi invasion continues at Lord’s as Southee signs

LORD’S is becoming a second home to New Zealanders with Tim Southee the latest Black Cap to join Middlesex.

Southee, 28, has signed as a second overseas player for the T20 Blast and links up with fellow Kiwi Brendon McCullum in joining the club, who are coached by former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori in T20.

Southee’s only previous spell in English domestic T20 came with Essex in 2011 when he claimed 22 wickets in 15 matches.

The seamer said: “I’m excited to be joining Middlesex this year for the T20 blast and helping the club throughout the T20 competitio­n.

“When the opportunit­y came up to play for Middlesex, it wasn’t a tough decision and I’m looking forward to calling Lord’s home while I’m there.”

In 39 T20Is Southee has picked up 46 wickets at an average of 26.71. He is currently representi­ng Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s managing director of cricket, added: “Tim is one of the leading fast bowlers in the world. He has plenty of experience in T20 cricket and looks to bowl in the periods where we feel we could be better.

“We look forward to welcoming him to Lord’s.”
