VERDICT
At first it looked as if Surrey were going to roll their visitors over cheaply and quickly.
At 122-6, Lancashire looked down and out. But any doubts among the Lancashire faithful about the wisdom of signing Shivnarine Chanderpaul, at 42, were put to rest as he proved almost impossible to dislodge, although Surrey will rue a missed chance early in his innings.
Just as importantly Chanderpaul is helping to inspire the next generation at Old Trafford. Jordan Clark played the innings of his career alongside the veteran West Indian.
After being on top for most of day one before that partnership, Surrey found themselves becalmed when they batted on day three. On a dry wicket, offering turn for the Lancashire spinners, they lost all momentum and, as coach Michael Di Venuto pointed out, created pressure on themselves.
However, following on, Surrey had learned their lesson.
Scott Borthwick drew on the experience of Kumar Sangakkara, 39, who made a magnificent 136 to secure a hard-fought draw.
The debate will continue about the value of signing veterans and the impact on the development of younger players. However, on this showing, there is much to be gained if the younger generation are willing to make the most of the opportunity to learn from some of the greats.
