Bowlers deserve credit too says centurion Jim
SOMERSET’S batting depth has been key to their superb start to the One-Day Cup but their latest centurion Jim Allenby was quick to give credit to the bowling attack.
Allenby smashed 144 not out against his former county Glamorgan in Cardiff as Somerset cruised to a fourth victory from their first four games in this year’s competition.
In doing so he not only secured his best ever List A score but also became Somerset’s fourth centurion in their first four games – after Roelof van der Merwe, Dean Elgar and Peter Trego.
But for Allenby, it is the bowling attack – led by Craig Overton, with van der Merwe’s spin in support – that has been key as they prepare to face Gloucestershire at Bristol.
“Our bowlers have been amazing in this tournament,” he said.
“The opening bowlers have been fantastic in every game and have been backed up brilliantly by the change bowlers and Roelof is probably the best spinner in the competition.
“I’m really happy with where we are at the moment in the competition.”
Meanwhile, Gloucs sat at the opposite end of the table after four rounds, and have lost six of their last seven against their local rivals.
Throw in Somerset’s impressive record of winning their last three Friday games, and Gloucs will need the in-form Ian Cockbain to fire today.
