Foster adjusting to life on the fringes at Essex

-

JAMES Foster has admitted he is struggling to get used to being on the sidelines, having been left out of the Essex side this season.

Wicketkeeper Foster, 37, is a former Essex captain though is yet to play this season with Adam Wheater being the man behind the stumps.

Foster has been working as cricket professional with Forest School in east London, where he was once a pupil. The former England keeper, who played seven Tests between 2001 and 2002, said: “I think in 2003 I didn’t play two or three one-day games, but not playing in any format at the moment is an unusual feeling.

“But the decision has been made and I’ve just got to chip away and be ready if the time comes.

“I’ve been keeping myself busy. I’ve suggested to the Essex management, coaching staff and captain about being around and helping out with the preparation on the coaching side of things, as an extra pair of hands, which I’ve started to do.

“I’ve had a little bit of time with MCC Young Cricketers and also doing a little bit more stuff with Forest School.” It’s probably no big surprise that Foster is finding it hard to adjust to life on the sidelines. He has been an Essex ever-present for the last decade, and more, and should probably have played more times for England. He’s approaching 40 now, so his playing days are certainly limited. Maybe a loan move could be on the cards – if another county does pick him up, he’ll surely succeed.
