Red Rose power has Northants on knees

SECOND XI ROUND-UP

- By Sam Hawthorn

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE suffered their first loss of the Second Eleven Trophy as they were soundly beaten after failing to contain a superb Lancashire batting display.

Brooke Guest and Luke Procter scored 110 not out and 134 respectively as the Red Rose motored to an impressive 336 from their 50 overs.

Northants, unbeaten in their three matches coming into the game, could only manage 169 in reply with their leg-spinners Mattie McKiernan and Matt Parkinson taking three wickets apiece as they dismantled the tail in spectacular fashion.

Lancashire now sit second in the standings alongside Roses rivals Yorkshire, after they proved too strong for Warwickshire at York.

The visitors came into the match on a high after downing Nottinghamshire last time out but halfcenturies from the Yorkshire top three helped them reach 200 inside 30 overs.

Jonathan Tattersall (98), Harry Brook (58) and Eliot Callis (55) gave the hosts a strong launch pad for the White Rose to set an imposing target of 362.

To their credit, Warwickshire fought back – reaching 106 within 20 overs – but then the loss of four wickets in just 12 deliveries during the middle of the innings proved to be the visitors’ downfall.

Despite a brief reprieve, Warwickshire ran out of batsmen and Yorkshire won by 92 runs.

Elsewhere, Nottinghamshire beat Durham by 104 runs thanks largely to Luke Wood’s superb knock of 121 from 115 deliveries for their first victory of the competition.

Surrey secured a similar victory over Gloucestershire to kickstart their season, as their bowling attack dismantled the Glos line-up within 40 overs to take a comprehensive 106-run victory.

And a superb Sussex bowling display put Kent to the sword in their successful defence of 222.

The Sharks spread their wickets across five bowlers as they bowled out Kent for just 133 to seal a comfortable triumph.
