Yorkshire into the knockout rounds despite Bears loss

- By Joshua Peck

YORKSHIRE put to bed their recent limited-overs woes as they ensured progression to the knockout stages of the One-Day Cup with one round of matches still to play.

For all their recent success with the red ball,Yorkshire’s last trophy playing in coloured clothing was the Friends Provident Trophy in 2002.

But they have given themselves a great chance of a July trip to Lord’s, ensuring qualification despite a fivewicket defeat by Warwickshire.

Joe Root had made 83 with Tim Bresnan adding 65 but Bears captain Ian Bell made 98, aided by Jonathan Trott (70) as Warwickshire chased down the total, reaching 284 for five with 15 balls to spare.

All-rounder Matthew Waite shone for Yorkshire, claiming two wickets with the ball and looking impressive with the bat as he made 71 and he said: “It’s just nice to be in a side with six internationals and pleasing to know that I can play in a side that good. Tim Bresnan has given me a lot of help. He just told me to stand still and hit the ball. Just that little bit of advice can make all the difference.”

The defeat meant the White Rose slipped to second, behind Worcestershire who beat Durham. Chasing 271, the visitors looked well set on 151-1 in the 29th over but went on to lose eight wickets for 87 runs. Worcestershire skipper Joe Leach said: “We probably looked a bit dead and buried after 25 overs but it is testament to the belief in the side and the run we are on that we believed we could win.

“That showed and as soon as we got that first wicket, we swarmed all over them and they panicked a little bit. In days gone by we might have folded and got hammered but we've got a very talented group. To show that character stands us in very good stead, especially going into what are the knockout stages of the competition now.” It was a weekend to forget for Derbyshire who, having lost to Lancashire on Friday, crumbled to 219 all out on their way to defeat by Leicestershire.

Nottinghamshire were easy winners over Lancashire, thanks to a fine century by Samit Patel, while Stuart Broad picked up 1-35 from eight overs.
