Holders in ominous form, says Hussey

- By Charlie Peat

AUSTRALIA come to England looking to defend their crown as ICC Women’s World Cup champions and they have a good chance of repeating their success, according to a legend.

Former Aussie batsman Mike Hussey believes they will have stiff competition from the likes of New Zealand and the hosts but is confident they can go far.

Australia beat the Kiwis in the final four years ago in India, chasing down 227 with seven wickets in hand, and Hussey believes Meg Lanning’s side are looking in ominous form.

“Australia are the defending champions and look a great chance to go deep into the tournament again this year,” the 42-year-old said.

“I am sure it will be a tough tournament with New Zealand, England, India and the West Indies all having some damaging players, and South Africa are also being talked up with their feared bowling attack.

“I’ll be watching the Aussie girls’ results closely over the next month and hope they can be world champions again.”

With plenty of experience in the squad, Hussey believes the likes of batter Alex Blackwell could be crucial for their chances of retaining their title.

He added:“The Aussies looked ominous in their first warm-up win against South Africa with Elyse Villani scoring a magnificent century, finishing with 137 off just 112 balls, including seven sixes.

“I was interested in comments by Alyssa Healy when she said that one of the team’s focus is to finish innings off better with the bat and she wanted to take more responsibility with this team goal. She and Alex Blackwell finished the innings off in style.”
