Spin king Qadri gets Under-19 India call

- By Seth Francis

SIXTEEN-year-old Hamidullah Qadri has been rewarded for his five wickets on his Derbyshire debut by being handed a place in the England U19 squad to face India this summer.

The Afghan-born off-spinner will be part of the squad for the one-day series that consists of five matches, having taken 5-60 to help Derbyshire beat Glamorgan and earn their first County Championship victory for two years.

Selectors have only considered players who are in contention for January’s U19 World Cup in the one-day squad, with it captained by Harry Brook.

Brook is set to take over from Max Holden, though a suspected broken hand suffered on Thursday may put pay to that. Holden will not be able to play in the World Cup, though he will captain the side in two fourday matches against India.

Established county players Sam Curran, Ollie Pope (both Surrey), Yorkshire’s Matt Fisher and Delray Rawlins of Sussex have not been considered.

Andy Hurry, head coach of the Young Lions, said: “With the World Cup in New Zealand early next year, it made sense only to consider players eligible for that when we were choosing our squad for the one-day series.”

The four-day matches get underway in Chesterfield on July 26, with the second match beginning on July 31 in Worcester. The one-day series begins in Cardiff on August 7.

Squad for two four-day matches against India:

Max Holden (Middlesex, capt), Liam Banks (Warwickshire), George Bartlett (Somerset), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Henry Brookes (Warwickshire), Ben Green (Somerset), Will Jacks (Surrey), George Panayi (Warwickshire), Ryan Patel (Surrey), Liam Patterson-White (Notts), Matt Potts (Durham), Oli Robinson (Kent, wk), Harry Swindells (Leicestershire, wkt), Josh Tongue (Worcestershire), Amar Virdi (Surrey).

For five-match one-day series against India:
