TCP VERDICT

-

This was a display that belied Somerset’s lowly position.Yes, Yorkshire are not at their most confident, but the visitors outplayed them on a ground which has become a White Rose stronghold in recent years.

From the moment Craig Overton and Tim Groenewald shared 61 for the last wicket in the first innings, Matthew Maynard’s men dominated this game.

As second-innings centurion James Hildreth said: “The bowlers have been excellent all season, with Craig leading us in this game brilliantly. It’s us batsmen who haven’t put our hands up.

“As you’ve seen when the batters get runs, we get into dominant positions.”

For Yorkshire, this was the latest blow to their stuttering title challenge, although there were mitigating circumstances in that seamers Ryan Sidebottom and Liam Plunkett went down injured mid-spell in the first and second innings.

Since beating Somerset by three runs at Taunton last month, they have failed to get any momentum due to a heavy loss against Middlesex at Lord’s, last week’s rain-affected pink ball draw against Surrey at Headingley.

Their only saving grace is the fact that they have leaders Essex to play twice, including here at Scarborough in their next fixture at the start of August.

They are now must-win matches.
