Eranga’s bowling is now legal

- By Seth Francis

SRI Lanka’s Shaminda Eranga can continue bowling after his action was cleared by the ICC.

Eranga’s action was found to be illegal in June last year after it was reported following Sri Lanka’s second Test against England.

He was assessed at Loughborough.

The 31-year-old was reassessed in Chennai recently and it was found that the amount of elbow extension in his standard deliveries was within the 15-degree level.

He has not played any competitive cricket since last June, having been hospitalised after he experienced an elevated heartbeat.

His last series saw him play two ODIs in Ireland.

An ICC statement said: “The umpires are still at liberty to report Eranga in the future if they believe he is displaying a suspect action or that he is not reproducing the action that has been declared legal during this assessment.

“To assist the umpires in this respect, they have been provided with images and video footage of the bowler’s legal bowling action.”

Eranga has made 19 Test appearances in total, taking 57 wickets at an average of 37.50.
