Forget one-day game, this is Test cricket now

-

JOE ROOTwanted a test for his captaincy ... well, he’s just had one and flopped.

Mind you, it’s not all his fault, his team-mates have to take some responsibility. Some are playing one-day style cricket in Tests.

I think that the batting line up needs Moeen Ali at No.5 and Bairstow No.7. Ali is clearly a classier batsman. If a second spinner is required, it should be the best we have and not just one who can bat. This is not one-day cricket!

Keaton Jennings probably needs another chance. Gary Ballance has had enough. We could have given a new No.3 a chance who couldn’t have done worse. Cook, now no longer captain, needs to step up with big scores. Stokes, now that he is vice-captain, also needs to up his game.

If the captaincy is going to affect Root’s batting then we need another captain. He got 190 in the first Test but was lucky not to get out cheaply.

Although it is early days, he has not shown yet that he can inspire his players or is tactically astute enough to be a clever captain.

Presumably the head coach is sitting back and letting him get on with it. He seems pretty good at that. PAUL MUNNERY Waterbeach
