Tewits clinch a Yorkshire treble

- By Charlie Peat

COMPLETING a treble at Headingley is something Hanging Heaton captain Gary Fellows could only dream about when he first started playing in the Bradford league 15 years ago.

It’s Fellows’ fifth season at the club and no doubt one of the most successful in the side’s history.

Bringing home the T20 crown was followed up by their first Bradford Premier Division success in 18 years, giving them a chance to clinch the Yorkshire Premier League trophy against the other league winners in the county.

Playing two matches in two days, the Tewits got the better of York on the Saturday before an enthralling clash against last season’s champions Wakefield Thornes which resulted in a three-run triumph.

“It was a brilliant weekend of cricket, we had great support from a lot of people at the club both Saturday and Sunday and they were two very different games,” a jubilant Fellows said.

“In the semi-final, we played near enough the perfect game but on Sunday we probably weren’t at our best but we got over the line. It went down to the final over, they needed ten off the last two balls and eight off the last so we just wanted to make sure there were no wides or no balls.

“Winning at Headingley is incredible, as league cricketers you don’t often get the chance to play at such a venue.

“A lot of the lads will go and watch Yorkshire and England there so be able to play there and have success and the memories it will bring; you cannot ask for any more.

“It’s something the whole club deserves credit for and to become the first-ever Bradford League side to win the Yorkshire Premier League trophy is very special.”

It was a season of many highs but Fellows picked out one decisive game that gave his side the belief they could go on to win the treble.

He said: “We went to New Farnley, who are a good side. We struggled quite a bit and they got around 320 but we eventually knocked them off.

“To go to New Farnley and knock off a score like that gave us a lot of confidence and belief that whatever situation we were in; we could win the game.”
