The Last

Bat you bought/used? The last bat I bought would have been a Gray-Nicolls Predator but the last one I used was one by Aero Cricket – they sponsor me. I didn’t get many runs this season with that stick but that’s not the bat’s fault. Song you downloaded? The last one would have been a J.Cole song. I would like to go see him live if I get a chance. Five-wicket haul or century? My last five-wicket haul would have been against Somerset in the Championship five games away from the end of the season. Injury you had? Unfortunately, it’s a stress fracture in my back. It’s happened over the summer at some point. I’ve pulled out of the England Lions squad (for the upcoming tour of Australia) but what can you do? I’ve got the access to the England physio and doctors and the plan is to get fit by Christmas, and go on the tour of the West Indies in January. Trophy you won? The County Championship last month. It’s nice to be able to say that I’ve won the top division.

The Jury’s Out

Tea or coffee? Coffee. Your last meal if you were on death row? Two pie and two mash with liquor. I’m a proper London boy. Caribbean with the missus or Magaluf with the lads? I’d have to say the Caribbean with the missus – my girlfriend Alex would kill me if I didn’t! 50-over, T20 or County Championship? The County Championship, no question about it. You saw how much it meant winning it this year.

Time added on

Who did you support as a boy? I have always followed Essex, and it’s a dream come true every time I step on the field for them. Best coach you have ever played with? Our current coach at Essex – Chris Silverwood. That’s an easy answer. Who’s most nervous person when next into bat? I’m going to say James Foster, our wicketkeeper. He’s always padded up very early and I’d say he has a lot of nervous energy when waiting. Person to avoid after being dismissed? Jesse Ryder, without a shadow of a doubt. I’ve seen him destroy a fridge before and he’s snapped a few bats too. One rule you would change? I’d say that if the ball hits a batter on the pad, no matter where it hits him, he’s out – that’s a classic bowler’s answer! Who’s your favourite pundit? It would have to be David Lloyd, just for sheer entertainment value. I love Bumble. Do you have any superstitions? I always like to sit closest to the door in the dressing room. That’s my spot in the Essex dressing room and when we’re away, I like to sit there as well. I noticed that it had become a common trend one day and I just carried on doing it from then on. Hobbies? Golf. I love my golf. I’m not great but I do enjoy having a round when I can.

And finally

Who is the worst dressed player at the club? Neil Wagner – he’ll hate that...
