Over the moon for Craig
I WAS delighted to see Marcus Trescothick’s endorsement of Craig Overton’s selection to England’s Ashes squad (TCP, October 20).
Admittedly, he is a Somerset team mate of Overton but a couple of well-renowned cricket broadcasters were quite disparaging about England’s lack of physical threat, suggesting that Overton wouldn’t frighten anyone and that Liam Plunkett should have perhaps gone instead.
Having watched the Yorkshire v Somerset match at Scarborough, I’m not so sure. Plunkett and Overton were the two stand-out bowlers and Plunkett and Sidebottom’s injuries probably decided the match.
Overton was very hostile and had Yorkshire’s batsmen hopping about with the bounce off a length to which Trescothick referred.
I would like both to have been in the touring party. There’s more to hostility than speed; for example I’ve seen both Glen Chapple and Dominic Cork look more hostile than Saj Mahmood did despite not being as fast.
I think that Overton, given the chance, could be as big a surprise as Chris Tremlett was in 2010/11.
