The Last

Bat you bought? I remember buying a GrayNicolls bat when I was about 12 or 13 and it lasted me ages. It obviously didn’t get used that much so I think I still had it when I was 17! Song you downloaded? That would probably be Ed Sheeran’s new album. I’m a fan of his and it would be good to see him play live. Five-wicket haul? That was against Gloucestershire at the end of the 2016 season. We finished third and so the game did not have much on it but it was nice to finish strongly and get a few. Injury you had? I damaged ligaments in my ankle when I was on tour in India with England. It was in the gym towards the end of the tour and I ended up not playing a game and coming home early. Touch wood I have been lucky since then. Trophy you won? That would have been the CB40 in 2012 and I played every game except the final! I was with England but it was still gutting missing out. It was a great season for Hampshire because we also won the T20. I watched the final on TV and it ebbed and flowed a bit. It was very hard to watch because it looked like we were going to lose before we pulled it out.

The Jury’s Out

Tea or coffee? I am a tea drinker. I am not fussy at all but obviously Yorkshire Tea is the best! Your last meal if you were on death row? I think I would go for a classic roast beef with all the trimmings. And for pudding, I would have a cheesecake. Caribbean with the missus or Magaluf with the lads? Tough question! My wife Linsey is unlikely to read this so I will say Magaluf with the boys! 50-over, T20 or County Championship? It is always a hard one because I have probably been more successful in T20 cricket but then the feeling of winning a fourday game is greater. It is more rewarding but there is nothing quite like being under the lights at night time in front of a big crowd.

Time added on

Who did you support as a boy? I supported Hampshire as a lad but I love all cricket so watch the lot. In football, I am a Portsmouth fan which has been hard work for a few years. We are on the way back up and there were some good times too. Best coach you have ever played with? I’ll go for Dale Benkenstein. He has a way of getting people to relax and have fun and it often brings out the best in players so it is a good environment to be in. Everyone plays with freedom. Who’s most nervous person when you’re next into bat? I think that’s Delray Rawlins, one of our young lads. He can get quite nervous. It’s hard to tell with a lot of our guys. Person to avoid after being dismissed? That is definitely Phil Salt. He is always someone to be aware of in the changing rooms when he’s lost his wicket. One rule change? Let’s make bats smaller and pitches bigger, help the spinners out! Hobbies? I spend a lot of time out on the golf course, it’s a good chance to get away and think about something else.

And finally

Worst dressed? That is another one of our young lads, Abi Sakande. Some of the things he wears, well I would not wear it, put it that way.
