England match ratings
Alastair Cook
When England needed him to get a big score he failed to deliver. Out twice to Nathan Lyon, a worrying sign for the rest of the series. 4/10
Mark Stoneman
Battled well in both innings and showed much-needed aggression in the second. Starting to look at home at this level. 6/10
James Vince
Had a shocker, caught twice behind the wicket. Also charged into Cook, who dropped Marsh. One more Test to save his England career? 1/10
Joe Root (c)
Poor decision to bowl first ultimately cost his team and despite composed knock during the chase was again unable to convert. 5/10
Dawid Malan
Showed grit composure and spirit despite failing to post a big score. Like Stoneman, he is starting to look at home at this level. 6/10
Moeen Ali
Poor with both bat and ball. Time to move down the order to seven? His failure to make any impact with his off-spin is hurting England badly. 3/10
Jonny Bairstow
Kept well and could do little to prevent defeat on the final day despite batting well for his 36. It’s time to promote him up the order. 6/10
Chris Woakes
Good with the bat in the first innings and poor with the ball. Fantastic with the ball in Australia’s second innings, taking 4-36. 6/10
Craig Overton
Fine debut, taking four wickets, a good catch in the deep to dismiss Tim Paine on day four and also scored useful firstinnings runs. 8/10
Stuart Broad
Bowled well throughout the match without much reward but kept the pressure on Australia’s batsmen. 7/10
James Anderson
How did he not find the right length on day one? Sensational in Australia’s second innings to take his first five-wicket haul in an away Ashes Test. 8/10
