Australia match ratings

- ALEX NAREY

Cameron Bancroft

A poor match after looking strong in Brisbane. Looks a bit edgey outside his off-stump. 4/10

David Warner

Run out his opening partner first dig and was tied in knots by England second time around. Not at his best. 4/10

Usman Khawaja

A decent knock and half-century, and with England lacking a potent spinner he looks a different player. 6/10

Steve Smith (c)

Not at his brilliant best with the bat, and his captaincy lacks a level of authority. Poor decision not to enforce follow-on. 4/10

Peter Handscomb

Chirps a lot better than he bats. Shocking technique. England will be desperate for him to retain his place for Perth. Not Test class. 2/10

Shaun Marsh

A great century that took the game away from England. Missed out in the second innings but looks in fine touch. 8/10

Tim Paine

Keeping superbly and a fine counter-attacking half-century is repaying the faith the selectors have shown in him. 7/10

Mitchell Starc

Bowled seriously quick in England’s first innings. Bagged a five-for as England chased. Took a sharp caught & bowled. 8/10

Pat Cummins

Another fine innings and his batting is stealing the headlines, but his pace and accuracy make him Aussie’s best quick. 8/10

Josh Hazlewood

Chipped in with crucial wickets, especially on the fifth morning. Still not hitting the heights of his very best, though. 6/10

Nathan Lyon

Spin, at good pace, and bounce, is making ‘Gaz’ look like taking a wicket with every ball, especially to the left-handers. 8/10
