The Last

Bat you bought? Kookaburra Kahuna in about 2009. I was sponsored by them for about a year and I got 50 per cent off the bat so that would be the last bat I bought. Song you downloaded? It was the new Eminem and Ed Sheeran song. I think it’s called River. Five-wicket haul? It was at Leicestershire at the start of September. I took 8-43 which was a career best so I was pretty chuffed with that. Everything went for me that day! Injury you had? I had a bulging disc in my back and I was out for three weeks during the season so I missed a few games. It was inconspicuous but it settled down quickly which was a great relief. Trophy you won? Player of the year at the end of season awards. It was great to be honoured in that way, especially when it’s teammates who voted for you. I didn’t know what to say. I was quite overwhelmed!

The Jury’s Out

Tea or coffee? Coffee – I’m just obsessed with it. Your last meal if you were on death row? I think it would have to be a Five Guys burger and chips. 50-over, T20 or County Championship? County Championship. My ambition has always been to play a Test match and I’ve got to be good at four-day cricket to do that. It has the tradition behind it.

Time added on

Who did you support as a boy? I didn’t really have a team. I grew up in Cornwall so all I really did was watch rugby. I loved watching England. But I was in Australia when we won the Ashes in 2010/11. Best coach you have ever played with? Richard Dawson. The way he manages the lads and gives us responsibility. He has so much knowledge of the game. I don’t think it will be long before he moves higher in the game. I think he’s brought the best out of me. Who’s most nervous person when you’re next into bat? It’s funny because a lot of people say me and they’re probably right! I’m an awful watcher, I walk around, I’ll be doing laps of the pavilion and doing anything not to watch the game. So I’ll have to say the most nervous person is me. Person to avoid after being dismissed? Jack Taylor. He doesn’t throw anything but he just sits in his seat and he’ll shout a lot. It’s all directed at himself. There’s no kit throwing. We haven’t got any kit throwers. Which TV pundit do you really listen to? Ricky Ponting. I’ve really enjoyed his commentary on the Ashes at the moment, and now he’s part of the Big Bash team, too. He talks from a lot of experience and he talks a lot of sense. I feel like I learn a lot from him. One rule change? I would have a super sub in T20. Once you’ve done the toss you can bring in an extra batsman for a bowler if you’re batting and vice versa. Then at halfway you can switch back. Do you have any superstitions? I always try to get to the ground at the same time each morning but I wouldn’t say that was a superstition! Hobbies? I’m a very bad golfer. I’m trying to get a little bit better and keep up with some of the other lads.

And finally

Who is the worst dressed player at the club? Gareth Roderick. Every away trip he wears the same sweatpants to travel with the team. He thinks it works but it really doesn’t. He gets a lot of stick for wearing the same pair.
