OUR QUEEN AT WAR
ITV, 9.00pm
ITV risk treading on Channel 5’s toes with this documentary about Her Majesty, the Queen’s experiences during the war – the youngest terrestrial channel airs at least one a week. Royal watchers hoping for new information will be disappointed – there’s nothing here that hasn’t been covered plenty of times before. But it’s a nicely made film and one that hits all the key points, from the young Princess’s reluctant realisation that the abdication of her uncle Edward VIII has left her next in line to the throne to the famous story of her and Princess Margaret’s VE Day celebrations.
The line-up of talking heads is comprehensive, featuring experts such as social historian Virginia Nicholson, who does a fine job of putting the era into context and explaining the importance of the royal family’s decision to remain in the UK, even as many aristocratic families were sending their children to Canada and the US. There’s a lovely cameo too from the redoubtable Lady Anne Glenconner, who discusses how she plotted Hitler’s downfall with her sister. It all adds up to a solid hour’s television and one which does a good job of reminding viewers of the strength of the Queen’s bond to her country. Sarah Hughes
