UNSAID STORIES
ITV, 9.00pm
Two strong televisual trends at the moment are socially distanced dramas with small casts and stories inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. Now ITV brings them together in this nightly series of short, punchy dramas, giving a prime-time platform to diverse voices. Just 15 minutes apiece, they’re all two-handers addressing attitudes towards race, created by black writers, producers and directors.
In this first instalment, titled Generational,
Oliver (Nicholas Pinnock) catches his teenage daughter, Justina (Yasmin Monet Prince), sneaking out of the house. The usual antagonism between parent and teenager follows, until it transpires that Justina is sneaking out to attend a BLM march – which only makes him worry for his daughter’s safety. From Jerome Bucchan-Nelson (who has written episodes of Bulletproof), it’s an impassioned yet nuanced exploration of father-anddaughter relationships and social attitudes. Over the next three nights, the series tackles mixed-race love, colourism and police bias with episodes starring a host of rising talent, including The Capture’s Adelayo Adedayo and three of the stars of Gangs of London: Pippa Bennett-Warner, Joe Cole and Paapa Essiedu.
