THE UNBELIEVABLE STORY OF CARL BEECH
BBC Two, 9.00pm; Wales, 9.30pm
Operation Midland was launched in 2014 after former NHS manager
Carl Beech claimed that he had been raped in the 1970s by politicians and public figures including former Prime Minister Edward Heath, former Home Secretary Leon Brittan, former MP Harvey Proctor and TV star Jimmy Savile. The claims were found to be false and Beech was jailed for 18 years for fraud and perverting the course of justice (he has recently launched a fresh challenge to the length of his sentence).
This film by Vanessa Engle airs just months after Scotland Yard referred itself to the police watchdog for
a second time, following formal complaints made by Proctor. Engle speaks to Dawn Beech, Carl’s ex-wife, and Lord
Brittan’s widow, Diana, who recalls the day that the police raided their home. Meanwhile, High Court judge Sir Richard Henriques, who wrote a damning report on the operation, calls it “poor policing, unjustifiable and frankly incompetent”. Operation Midland had a terrible impact on those falsely accused (Proctor lost his home and job) and while the finger is pointed, the film’s occasional eccentric production decision threatens to trivialise its own investigation.
