TWO WEEKS TO LIVE
Sky One/NOW TV, 10.00pm
Meet Kim (Maisie Williams). She’s been raised in isolation by her survivalist mother (Sian Clifford) after witnessing her father’s brutal death as a child. She can load a gun in under 60 seconds, has a nice touch with a hunting knife and no qualms about violence. On the other hand, she’s never been in a pub, worn heels or kissed a boy, and, thanks to a prank gone wrong, she’s convinced that the world is going to end in two weeks.
Writer Gaby Hull is clearly aiming for The End of the F***ing World’s market here and, while Two Weeks to Live lacks that show’s style and confidence, there are some decent jokes using gangland tropes aided by some solid supporting performances, with Mawaan Rizwan as the hapless Nicky a standout. This is all about Williams, however, and she ably ensures that we care for Kim even when she is exacting bloody revenge. Indeed, the only real issue is that the show’s greatest strength is also arguably its biggest weakness: Two Weeks to Live works precisely because we know and love Williams as Game of Thrones’s baby-faced assassin Arya Stark. Would it hang together so satisfyingly with a different lead?
I’m not convinced.
