EFL Cup: Man United v Man City
Wed, Sky Main Event, 7.30pm (kick off 7.45pm)
The packed Christmas fixture list is capped off with a guilty seasonal indulgence in the form of this closely matched Manchester derby in the EFL Cup semi-final, which this season is just a single leg. Amid a worsening second wave of Covid-19, clubs are battling to prevent outbreaks with only days between matches. City missed their league meeting with Everton last week and tomorrow’s match against Chelsea depends on another round of testing (Sky Main Event, 4.30pm). Pep Guardiola has focused on shoring up a leaky City defence, at the expense of their usual sparkling attack, while United seem to have adopted City’s free-scoring confidence. The other semi-final takes place on Tuesday as Tottenham Hotspur take on Championship side Brentford (Sky Main Event, 7.45pm), with
Spurs facing a quick turnaround from today’s Premier League match with Leeds United
(BT Sport, 12.30pm).
Wasps v Exeter Chiefs Saturday, BT Sport 2, 1.15pm (kick off 2pm)
With Saracens banished to the Championship, Exeter’s stranglehold on the Premiership looks unbreakable, having taken five points from each of their first four matches. Wasps have made a patchy start, and their turnstile defence
needs work, but with a squad full of international talent they can challenge anyone when the mood strikes. Beyond the top spot, both the play-offs and the dreaded relegation race are wide open. Gloucester face Sale Sharks later today (BT Sport, 4.30pm), while struggling Leicester Tigers take on Bath tomorrow at Welford Road (BT Sport 1, 3pm).
