Alli landed with three-match Uefa ban after red card

-

Dele Alli has been hit with a threegame European ban that could mean he misses half of Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League group games next season.

Uefa has handed Alli the suspension for the challenge on Gent midfielder Brecht Dejaegere that earned him a red card and contributed to Spurs’ Europa League elimination last month.

Players who are sent off in European competition get a minimum one-game ban and Uefa decided to add two extra matches due to the severity of Alli’s offence.

Tottenham are second in the Premier League table and should they clinch a top-three finish and automatic Champions League qualification, Alli will miss half their group games.

The ban is a big blow to Spurs, who failed to qualify for the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League and were immediately knocked out of the Europa League at the last-32 stage.

Alli missed the final three Premier League games of last season after admitting a charge of violent conduct for punching West Bromwich Albion’s Claudio Yacob.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have been fined £4,300 after some of their fans ran on to the pitch during the 5-1 Champions League home defeat by Bayern Munich this month.

Uefa has also fined Bayern £2,600 after the German club’s supporters delayed the game at the Emirates Stadium by throwing rolls of paper onto the pitch in protest over ticket prices.
