Sturridge’s latest injury could signal the end of his Liverpool career

-

Liverpool are unsure if Daniel Sturridge will play for the club again this season – which could mean he has played his last game at Anfield.

Sturridge pulled out hours before Sunday’s game with Crystal Palace – a 2-1 defeat – citing a recurrence of a hip injury. As has often been the case with the striker’s catalogue of problems, the club’s staff do not know if it will be days or weeks before the player considers himself fit for selection.

Liverpool have four fixtures left to secure a Champions League place and have been plagued by injuries. Manager Jürgen Klopp will give Sturridge every chance to make a contribution, but like his predecessor, Brendan Rodgers, has become familiar with the striker’s issues. Sturridge’s Liverpool future has been clouded in uncertainty since last year, his poor appearance record making it inevitable a summer bid for him will be considered.

Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Emre Can says he will be a Manchester City supporter this week after what he described as the “stupidity” of his side’s loss to Palace.

Klopp’s side have surrendered control of the race for the Champions League positions – a top-four finish is no longer in their hands. But the Merseyside club do have the consolation of knowing their rivals must still face each other over the next month. Now Can wants a City victory against Manchester United on Thursday to ensure Jose Mourinho’s side do not move above Liverpool in the table.

“Is that the better result? A City win? Then I am for City!” said Can. “One of the top teams will drop points and that is a good thing.”
