Lambert on the brink of Wolves exit
Paul Lambert is poised to leave Wolves amid huge concerns over the club’s transfer policy and the influence of Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes.
Lambert’s future as head coach has been plunged into doubt after just six months, with the Wolves hierarchy battling to prevent the Scot from leaving Molineux.
The former Aston Villa and Blackburn manager is thought to be unhappy with the Championship club’s stance on new signings and is refusing to accept a proposed influx of unknown foreign players.
Lambert was keen to buy a core of British players this summer, as well as bringing in two signings from abroad recommended by Mendes, who has close links to Wolves owners Fosun, the Chinese conglomerate.
Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, Newcastle defender Grant Hanley and Tom Lawrence, who impressed on loan at Ipswich from Leicester, were all targets for the Scot. But The Daily Telegraph understands that Lambert has been informed that Mendes will be handling all player recruitment this summer, which has left him seriously considering his future.
Talks are ongoing but it is understood the 47-year-old’s time at the Championship club is coming to an end.
Many of the players signed last summer under Lambert’s predecessor Walter Zenga, including £7million winger Ivan Cavaleiro, Silvio and Cameron Borthwick-jackson, barely featured. Lambert’s two signings in January, Andreas Weimann and Ben Marshall, proved pivotal in the second half of the season.
But now it seems Wolves will be looking for their third manager in 12 months.
