Solomona to miss Argentina

- By Julian Benetts

Denny Solomona is likely to be ruled out of England’s squad to tour Argentina after the rugby league recruit suffered a foot injury.

The Sale Sharks wing will undergo a scan today on the foot strain he picked up during training, with Eddie Jones confirming the 23-year-old is likely to be ruled out of the tour.

The news is a blow to Jones after he fast-tracked Solomona into his England squad, claiming the New Zealand born winger has “the X-factor” to make an immediate impact in the international game.

“He has a mid-foot strain,” said Jones. “We believe it will be pretty doubtful he goes on tour.”

Jones also sprung a shock by calling up Saracens scrum-half Richard Wigglesworth to his training squad ahead of Sunday’s game with the Barbarians at Twickenham.

The England coach also expressed surprise when he was questioned over the fact Wigglesworth still made himself available for England, saying only one player in his tenure – thought likely to be Steffon Armitage – had turned down a call-up.

“He has always been a good player,” said Jones. “You guys are making a big deal about him making himself available but I thought it was normal when you are English that you want to play for England.

“Someone asked me last week how many have knocked me back and it’s only one player. I won’t name him but you can work it out for yourself. He is playing in France.”
