Mendes takes £7m cut in Ederson deal
Agent cashing in as FA checks third-party issues Toure signs extension for another year with City
Jorge Mendes’s agency will take a £7million cut of the £34.8million fee that Manchester City have paid for Ederson, as Claudio Bravo claimed he was “not worried” by the impending arrival of the Brazil Under-23 goalkeeper from Benfica.
While City announced yesterday that Yaya Touré had signed a 12-month contract extension, the Football Association was busy scrutinising the Ederson deal to ensure all issues around the player’s thirdparty ownership had been resolved before ratifying the transfer.
Benfica have formally confirmed the transfer but it is awaiting the FA’S sign-off. Fifa banned thirdparty ownership in May 2015 but ruled that “existing arrangements can remain in place until their ordinary contractual expiry”.
Under the terms of Ederson’s prospective move to City, Benfica will receive 50 per cent of the fee – £17.4 million – with 30 per cent (£10.4million) going to Rio Ave, the player’s former club. The remaining £7million will be paid to Gestifute, the firm run by Mendes, the world’s most powerful football agent, who owned 20 per cent of Ederson’s economic rights.
Bravo’s struggles during a torrid debut season following his move from Barcelona forced manager Pep Guardiola back into the market for a goalkeeper but the Chilean has vowed to fight for his place.
“Ederson? All my life I’ve had competition,” Bravo told AS Chile. “I am not worried. My future is tied to Manchester City for a long time yet.”
Touré, 34, has ended speculation about his own future by signing a deal that will extend his stay at the club to an eighth year, although it was unclear last night if the Ivory Coast midfielder has had to take a substantial cut to his £240,000-aweek wages.
City are pushing ahead with efforts to sign Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy, although the club have the threat of a transfer ban hanging over them. The Court of Arbitration for Sport will hear allegations from Argentine club Vélez Sarsfield on July 3 that City approached Benjamin Garré while he was still 15, and signed him against transfer rules when he turned 16. If the CAS rules in favour of Vélez, a standard penalty would be a ban for City from registering players for two transfer windows.
