Lions man marking

- By Gavin Mairs

15 Liam Williams

Showed glimpses of his attacking potential from full-back. Just a shame he had not shown enough of it earlier.

3 Dan Cole

Dominated his opposite number as midweek side backed up the strong scrummaging display against the Maori.

14 Jack Nowell

Wow. Big disappointment until finding his England form last night. Two great finishes and contested better in the air.

4 Iain Henderson

Made a superb pass in build-up to Nowell’s second try and showed his tremendous ball-carrying strength.

13 Jared Payne

His pace and composure in the wide channels gave the Lions an attacking spearhead. Great support line for his try.

5 Courtney Lawes

Will go down as a tour warriors. Had another head injury check, but kept stealing line-outs and winning turnovers.

12 Robbie Henshaw

Recovered from uncertain start, including kicking the ball out on the full, and strong carrying helped the Lions take control.

6 James Haskell

Solid shift, and was particularly impressive with his clear-outs and ability to turn bad ball into usable possession.

11 Elliot Daly

Was it a Test pointer that he was taken off after just 60 minutes? Gatland is a fan, and he was potent with ball in hand.

7 Justin Tipuric

This was the most open contest the Lions have had, and it suited him. Effective at breakdown and a decent wide link-man.

10 Dan Biggar

Good distribution for first try and tried to mix his game with chips. Did not shy away from his defensive work.

8 CJ Stander

Has maintained an impressive level and delivered yet again. Made hard yards every time with his returns.

9 Greig Laidlaw

Scotland scrum-half has struggled with the pace of the game here, but this was probably his best display so far.

17 Allan Dell

Only one of controversial six call-ups to get action, he came on after Marler’s yellow card and won a scrum penalty.

1 Joe Marler

Indiscipline cost him a yellow card in the 12th minute, but he brought an edge to the scrum and close quarters.

20 Alun Wyn Jones

Came on earlier than wanted after Lawes’s head injury, but was needed only for an impactful six minutes.

2 Rory Best

Two poor throws spoiled captain’s night. Scrummed well and clear-out work was impressive, but errors hurt the Lions.

23 Tommy Seymour

Came on for Daly but spoiled a great break by delivering a poor pass to Payne with the try-line at his mercy.
