Sangakkara marches past 1,000 runs

-

Kumar Sangakkara became the first batsman to pass 1,000 runs in the Specsavers County Championship season, laying waste to the Yorkshire attack on his way to 180 not out on a rain-hit second day at Headingley.

Only one session was possible, but the Sri Lankan was at his swaggering best, scoring 98 runs in 59 balls to lead Surrey to 516 for seven declared. Yorkshire in reply were 27 for one, Adam Lyth going leg before to Sam Curran for eight.

Just 13 overs were possible between Hampshire and Somerset at the Ageas Bowl. Gareth Berg claimed an early breakthrough when he duped Somerset opener Marcus Trescothick into chopping the ball on to his own stumps.

Mark Wood proved his fitness for England ahead of the Test series against South Africa with five for 54 before rain halted Durham’s Second Division match at home to Worcestershire. The paceman took the visitors’ final two wickets with the new ball, but not before they had established a lead of 170. Brett D’oliveira completed his century and Moeen Ali made 58 in Worcestershire’s total of 367 in response to Durham’s 197. Tony Palladino’s four wickets for 36 gave Derbyshire the edge at Glamorgan as the visitors led by 53 runs. Derbyshire were two without loss at the close, having bowled the home side out for 237.

Rain prevented any play at Chelmsford and Hove.
