Johnston hits back at ‘out of order’ clown talk

- By Daniel Zeqiri

Andrew “Beef ” Johnston has launched a second attack on two radio presenters for running a show asking if he was an inspiration or a “clown”.

Johnston took to Twitter to criticise the Talksport pair Mike Parry and Mike Graham on Saturday, and expanded on his position after his final Open round.

Angered by what he viewed as a disrespectful, personal attack, Johnston said: “I had a few people message me and said, ‘Maybe you should listen to the show’. And it was actually worse listening to it. I don’t mind being criticised. It’s good taking people’s opinions, to see what I can do better, and if they put a poll out saying, maybe I spend too much time with the fans or I don’t concentrate, would he play better, I’d understand that.

“But when he’s taking the p--out of my face, my teeth, and stuff like that, I think it’s bang out of order.”

The presenters defended themselves on Twitter by pointing out that “inspiration” won their poll and that Parry argued in Johnston’s favour during the show. The golfer responded on social media: “If I’m a clown for enjoying my work then so be it. Ur a sad person and couldn’t care less wat u think.”

European Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjorn wrote a tweet supporting Johnston. He stated: “If anyone has any doubt about @Beefgolf & his intentions – you only have to spend a little time with him to understand his true commitment.”

Johnston was adamant the row had not affected his preparations at Royal Birkdale yesterday, where he carded a frustrating 71 alongside compatriot Paul Casey.

He was given a warm reception by the galleries surrounding the 18th hole, highlighting the special relationship he has forged with much of the public.

The charismatic golfer said: “Everywhere I go, the fans have been brilliant and I absolutely love it. I have never dreamt of being able to walk down 18 on a Sunday Open. It means the world to me. It’s the best thing.”

Johnston is yet to win on tour this season, but believes he is capable of regaining his best form over the coming weeks. Qualification for next month’s USPGA Championship is far from secure and his next few appearances will dictate if he makes it to Quail Hollow.

“It’s close, man,” he said. “I’ve grinded so hard these four weeks trying to find something, an edge, and I just haven’t found it. But I’ve been proud the way I’ve battled the last four weeks and battled this week. Yeah, it just hasn’t been there. But I know it’s not far, and you’ve just got to stay positive.”
