Broad’s bursts Strike bowler’s greatest spells

- Nick Hoult

v Australia, The Oval, 2009 Bowling an 11-over spell from the Vauxhall End, Stuart Broad put England in a serieswinning position with five for 37. A few days later he was on the Jonathan Ross Show with Jamie Oliver and Ricky Gervais, as celebrity touched him for the first time. v India, Trent Bridge, 2011 Broad’s first Test hat-trick in a spell of five for 5 from 5.1 overs turned the match in England’s favour and sent them on their way to dominating the rest of the series and to the No1 Test ranking in the world. v New Zealand, Lord’s, 2013 A low-scoring Test was decided by brilliance from Broad on the Sunday afternoon as he took his then career best figures of seven for 44, bowling unchanged for the entire innings as New Zealand were out for 68. v Australia, Trent Bridge, 2015 The first time he had to lead the attack in the absence of injured James Anderson and Broad delivered a careerdefining performance, as well as his most famous image – holding his hands to his face in shock after a catch by Ben Stokes. His eight for 15 left Australia humiliated and the Test – and the Ashes – were decided in England’s favour by lunch on the first day. v South Africa, Johannesburg, 2016 It took 31 balls and cost only one run as Broad claimed five wickets to break South African resistance in a seriesclinching victory. It ended South Africa’s time at No1 in the world and stunned a Saturday afternoon crowd at the Wanderers into silence.
