Bristol City shock Watford

-

Bristol City produced the shock of the night as they triumphed 3-2 over Premier League side Watford at Vicarage Road.

Watford took the lead through Etienne Capoue but Lee Johnson’s Championship side hit back as goals from Freddie Hinds and a long-range effort from Bobby Reid put them in front before Niclas Eliasson made the game safe. Adrian Mariappa pulled one back for the hosts, who had Jose Holebas sent off.

“We looked really assured in a Premier League team’s back yard and that’s the most pleasing thing,” said Bristol City assistant manager Dean Holden.

Bournemouth avoided the same fate as they came back from a goal down to win 2-1 at Birmingham City thanks to goals from Ryan Fraser and Mark Pugh, while Jay Rodriguez scored his first goal for West Brom as they won 3-1 at Accrington. Swansea and Brighton were the other Premier League sides in action and they both progressed, the former thanks to a 3-1 win at MK Dons, Leroy Fer scoring twice, and the latter easing to victory over Barnet after James Tilley scored the only goal of the game.

Aston Villa made 11 changes to the side that beat Norwich at the weekend but Steve Bruce’s Championship side beat League One visitors Wigan Athletic 4-1 at Villa Park, with Scott Hogan scoring twice.

Brentford also won by exactly the same scoreline, in their case at West London rivals QPR, while Championship high-flyers Cardiff went down 2-1 at home to Burton.

American midfielder Lynden Gooch scored his first goal for

Sunderland as they men won 2-1 at Carlisle, while Norwich beat Charlton 3-1, Bristol Rovers won 1-0 at Fulham and Derby edged a 1-0 victory at Grimsby.
