England blow as full-back Waterman misses final

- By Kate Rowan

England have been dealt a major injury blow ahead of their World Cup final against New Zealand as their influential full-back Danielle Waterman has been ruled out after suffering concussion.

Waterman, a 74-cap veteran, suffered concussion during Tuesday night’s semi-final against France in Belfast.

The 32-year-old, who was taken off in the first half, was competing in her fourth World Cup and was a crucial part of the Red Roses’ victorious campaign in 2014.

There was concern after Waterman failed her head-injury assessment, but management could not confirm the extent of her injury in the immediate aftermath of the game.

The Taunton woman also represented Team GB in sevens at the Rio Olympic Games last year. She made her Test debut in 2003, becoming the youngest woman, at the age of 18, to represent her country.

Waterman’s overall game and ability to attack from deep has marked her out during her side’s title defence in Ireland.

England head coach Simon Middleton said: It’s disappointing to lose Danielle ahead of the final. She has delivered outstanding performances throughout the tournament and has been a highly valued member of the squad.

“However, we have a number of strong options available to us as we begin preparing for Saturday’s final against New Zealand.”

Speculation will now mount as to who will take the No15 shirt. Emily Scarratt, usually an openside centre, has slotted in impressively for spells at full-back, while 20-yearold Megan Jones is another strong contender.

Meanwhile, England have pledged not to be distracted by the controversy over the Rugby Football Union’s decision over not extending contracts after an IT entrepreneur, Simon Pennock, offered to cover the costs of keeping all players on full-time deals.

“We are totally focused on the job at hand, and in our own little bubble,” said captain Sarah Hunter.
