And West Ham battle for Barca’s Gomes

-

start his career. It is understood that the loan deals being discussed by Tottenham and West Ham for Gomes both involve a hefty fee and an expensive wage packet. Juventus are also interested.

The move for Gomes does not rule out Spurs from also making a deadline-day bid for long-term target Ross Barkley of Everton, although that situation has been complicated by his injury and Chelsea’s interest.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have been given the green light to push ahead with the signing of Serge Aurier from Paris St-germain.

Aurier was informed yesterday that the French courts had downgraded the criminal conviction he received last year, allowing him to successfully submit a normal work-permit application.

Spurs agreed the deal for Aurier some time ago, but had been left to sweat on whether or not the rightback would be allowed to enter the country.

Aurier was given a suspended two-month prison sentence for the assault of a police officer outside a Paris nightclub, which he appealed against.

The 24-year-old Ivory Coast international missed a Champions League game at Arsenal last season after being denied permission to enter the UK because of his conviction. But Aurier is now able to complete his Tottenham move, assuming there is no bid to hijack the deal by either Manchester United or Chelsea, who had also shown an interest in the player.

Tottenham have completed the £8 million signing of central defender Juan Foyth from Estudiantes. The 19-year-old said: “I really like this club. I’ve always followed it since I was a boy. It’s a club that believes in young players and I’m very pleased to be here.

“I know this club has great history and is one of the biggest clubs in England. I’m very happy to be here, it’s a dream for me.

“I also know that many young players are in the team at the moment. I think there’s a wonderful project here.

“It’s a club that bets on the young and I think I’m going to have a chance to play. I also spoke with Mauricio Pochettino and I liked what he said. It’s what helped me decide that Tottenham was the right place to continue my career.

“He told me to go, train and that I would be involved and I would play. He also told me what the club is like.”
