Rowett demands more after Derby’s demolition job

- By Tim Nash at Pride Park

Gary Rowett insisted his Derby team could improve further after they thrashed Hull City. Four firsthalf goals through Matej Vydra’s double, Curtis Davies and Bradley Johnson blew the visitors away before Johnson completed the rout in the 58th minute.

The Derby manager said: “Some of the people we’ve brought in have given us a tougher edge but I still believe we can get better. We have to find that level of consistency. It’s great to play so well and win 5-0 but we need to play badly and win 1-0.

“If you lose you can think the sky is falling in but I knew if we won it would put us in a good position.”

Derby went ahead with a 15thminute free-kick from Vydra, who doubled it on 34 minutes when he drove home after Johnson split the defence and David Nugent laid the ball into the Czech’s path.

Hull missed the chance to level on 27 minutes when midfielder Sebastian Larsson blazed over from the penalty spot.

Derby made it 3-0 when Davies, who moved from Hull this summer, glanced home a corner. Johnson bundled home seconds before halftime, then picked his spot for the fifth goal after a woeful clearance to seal Derby’s biggest win since hammering Wolves by the same scoreline on Nov 8, 2014.

Hull manager Leonid Slutsky said: “First of all I apologise to our supporters because they don’t deserve this result. It’s the biggest defeat of my coaching career.”
