Smith to quit Warrington

-

Tony Smith is leaving Warrington by mutual consent at the end of the season. The 50-year-old is the longest-serving coach in Super League history but the Wolves, one of the pre-season favourites for the title, have struggled this year.

Smith’s side finished in the bottom four and found themselves fighting to retain their top-flight status, which they secured with a narrow victory over Leigh in the Super 8s Qualifiers on Saturday.

Smith’s final match in charge will be at the Halliwell Jones Stadium against Hull KR, who also secured a Super League place this weekend.

“I’ve really enjoyed my nine years and feel that it’s now in the best interests of all for us to go in different directions,” said Smith. Former Wigan and South Sydney coach Michael Maguire is being tipped as a possible replacement.

London Broncos remain in contention for the Million Pound Game after easing past bottom side Halifax 36-14 in the Super 8s Qualifiers.

The Broncos had taken only one point from their first four matches but are now within a point of Leighwho, along with Catalans Dragons, occupy the Million Pound Game spots.
