Scarlets snap up derby points to stay top

- By Ben Coles

The Pro14’s return was headlined by four derby clashes between leading Welsh and Irish outfits, with Leinster taking the spoils at Ulster and Scarlets maintaining their lead at the top of Conference B with a win against Cardiff Blues.

Luke Mcgrath’s two tries were enough for Leinster to get the edge in Belfast, with Ulster’s line-out capitulating despite the return of Ireland hooker Rory Best. The 2510 result keeps Leinster in touch with the Scarlets, who hold a threepoint advantage after their bonuspoint win at home to the Blues.

In-form winger Steff Evans, hotly tipped to feature for Wales in the autumn internationals, scored the bonus-point try in a 30-17 victory.

Glasgow Warriors continue to set the standard in the other half of the competition, leading Conference A by 12 points following their win against the Kings and Munster’s defeat at Connacht.

Warriors ran in seven tries in a 43-13 home victory against the Kings, with Stuart Hogg among the try scorers, while Tom Farrell’s superb solo effort was enough for Connacht to put away 14-man Munster 20-16 after the visitors lost Andrew Conway to a red card.

Cheetahs snatched a 24-23 win over Zebre in Parma with Makazole Mapimpi crossing twice, while

Edinburgh came through to win 24-13 at Treviso. Ospreys secured their second win of the Pro14 season with their 28-14 triumph over Dragons, moving them off the bottom of Conference A.
