Decision on Arsenal pair next month

- By Jason Burt

Arsenal will decide on the futures of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil next month, Arsene Wenger has said, while the Arsenal manager reaffirmed that whether he himself stays at the club beyond this season will be discussed with the board when the campaign ends.

Both Sanchez and Ozil are out of contract next June and Sanchez is expected to join Manchester City in the January transfer window or next summer, when he will be able to leave for free. At present there are no negotiations with either Sanchez or Ozil on a new contract after talks stalled.

It means Arsenal are in danger of allowing both to go without receiving any transfer fee and when asked about their futures, and whether one of either might be sold in January, Wenger told bein Sport: “No decision has been made on that front. Do we let anyone go in January or not? We’ll have to think about that to see where we stand with them at the end of December.”

Wenger himself signed a new two-year contract at the end of last season and, at the club’s annual meeting last month, he said he would discuss his future with the board at the end of the season. He later insisted those comments were misinterpreted but, in his latest comments, he did not offer a guarantee he would see out his deal.

“I said I sit down with the board at the end of every end of season and see where we go from there,” Wenger said.

“Sometimes, you know, you make a sentence and people turn it the way they would like to see it.

“That’s what I said – I have a twoyear contract, I will always try to go to the end of my contract but always have the honesty to sit down with the board and see where we go from there. So that’s quite simple.”
