West Ham join the chase to sign N’zonzi
David Moyes has confirmed that West Ham United are interested in signing midfielder Steven N’zonzi in the January transfer window.
Moyes has told co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold what he believes is needed in the New Year to help keep the club in the Premier League.
Midfield is a position Moyes wants to strengthen and West Ham are looking at William Carvalho, having smoothed relations with Sporting Lisbon, and Bournemouth’s Harry Arter.
But Moyes admitted that former Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City player N’zonzi, who wants to leave Sevilla, is also on West Ham’s radar.
“I think he’s somebody who would be of interest to us if he came on the market,” said Moyes. “I wouldn’t say that about others, but he’s not playing for some reason at Sevilla – albeit the manager’s gone, so maybe that changes the situation.”
N’zonzi has been reported to have travelled to London this month to try to arrange a move, with Everton coach Sam Allardyce revealing an interest and Arsenal also linked.
Despite having gone three games unbeaten, Saturday’s defeat by Newcastle means West Ham are only a point ahead of third-bottom Bournemouth ahead of today’s clash at the Vitality Stadium.
Moyes has not ruled out starting either Andy Carroll and Javier Hernandez up front. “I know what Andy and Chicharito’s qualities are,” he added. “There will be occasions when we change the team and the set-up will suit Andy or Chicharito.”
